📖 The Birth of Madness – The Anonymous Knight
Beneath the Spanish sun of La Mancha, in a room overflowing with dusty tomes of chivalry and magic, lived a man named Alonso Quixano. Once a modest landowner, he gradually came to believe that stories were truer than life itself. And so, he shed his old name and became Don Quixote, a self-proclaimed knight.
Wearing a patched helmet and wielding a crooked lance, he named his skinny, aging horse Rocinante, declaring it to be the bravest steed of all. Above all, he imagined a lady to whom he would dedicate his chivalry—Dulcinea del Toboso—a rough peasant girl seen through the lens of pure idealism.
“I draw this sword for one reason only: for Dulcinea.”
Thus began a journey born not of logic, but of splendid madness.
⚔️ First Quest – Tilting at Windmills
One bright afternoon, Don Quixote faced what he believed were monstrous giants. In truth, they were mere windmills.
“They are the enemies of justice! Take my lance!”
Charging on Rocinante, he hurled himself at the windmills—only to be flung through the air by the spinning blades. Bloodied and bruised, he murmured:
“A sorcerer must have transformed them.”
No one believed such nonsense, but Don Quixote remained undeterred. His belief ran deeper than wounds.
🧳 Sancho Panza – A Bridge Between Dream and Reality
Believing he needed a squire, Don Quixote lured the poor farmer Sancho Panza with the promise of governing an island. Skeptical at first, Sancho slowly began to see the world differently.
“Master, the world isn’t that simple.”
“Exactly. That’s why we must exist.”
Their good deeds were often misunderstood. They were ridiculed, assaulted, and accused. Yet they laughed, and Rocinante galloped on.
🏰 Return and Ridicule – The Collapse of a Dream
Don Quixote returned to his village, broken in body. His niece and a priest burned his books, declaring them the source of his madness. But it wasn’t books—it was life that had driven him to madness.
Still, he did not curse the world. He believed he had simply not fulfilled his quest.
“I shall ride again. Justice still slumbers.”
🎭 Second Quest – A World of Mockery and Theater
The next journey was grander—but cruel. Nobles turned him into a spectacle. A fake duke and duchess played elaborate pranks. Sancho even "ruled" a fake island—mere illusion.
Don Quixote suspected the deceit, but clung to the dream. Even in a false world, he sought to live truly.
“I live as a real man in a fake world.”
And still, there lingered Dulcinea—faint, perhaps, but forever clear in his eyes.
🌘 Decline and Silence – A Knight Faces Truth
Near the end, he spoke less. Rocinante no longer ran. The sky no longer held his gaze. A young knight challenged him. Defeated, Don Quixote vowed to renounce knighthood.
It was not just a loss, but an acceptance—that his world had finally crumbled.
“I am no longer Don Quixote. I must return as Alonso Quixano.”
Sancho wept.
“No... you were the true knight. You were the only one who was real.”
And so, with a quiet breath, he departed.
🧱 What He Leaves Us Today – Three Lessons
- The world mocks the mad, but sincere madness often reveals humanity.
- Though Don Quixote failed, his failure became a timeless tale.
- Even now, what you see as real might be someone else’s windmill.
