The Picture of Dorian Gray

1. About the Author: Oscar Wilde – A Master of Wit and Paradox

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish playwright and novelist, known for his dazzling wit, flamboyant style, and critiques of Victorian moral hypocrisy. A key figure of the Decadent movement, Wilde explored themes of beauty, morality, and art with elegance and provocation. The Picture of Dorian Gray is his only novel, yet stands as a cornerstone of aesthetic literature, delving into the dangers of hedonism and moral disintegration.

2. Full Summary – Time and Events

The Portrait of Fate

In London, artist Basil Hallward paints a portrait of a strikingly handsome young man named Dorian Gray. Dorian, with his pure beauty and mysterious charm, becomes Basil’s artistic muse. The painting becomes more than a portrait—it becomes a vessel for his soul.

The Temptation of Hedonism

On the day the portrait is completed, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a philosopher of pleasure. Lord Henry espouses youth and indulgence, leaving a deep impression on Dorian. Fearing the loss of his youth, Dorian exclaims, “If only the picture could grow old, and I remain forever young.” His wish comes true.

Sibyl’s Tragedy

Dorian falls in love with Sibyl Vane, a theater actress. Her purity and talent captivate him, but after becoming lovers, she falters on stage. Disappointed, Dorian cruelly ends the relationship. Sibyl commits suicide. That night, the portrait begins to change—its first mark of his inner guilt.

The Secret of the Portrait

Realizing the painting reflects his soul, Dorian hides it in the attic. While his appearance remains youthful, he indulges in debauchery and becomes notorious in London society. Friends crumble around him, but Dorian remains untarnished on the surface.

Basil’s Death

Years later, Basil visits and confronts Dorian about rumors. Dorian shows him the corrupted painting. Horrified, Basil begs him to repent. Enraged, Dorian murders Basil. It is his first murder. He coerces his friend Alan Campbell into disposing of the body. Alan later takes his own life.

Piling Sins

Dorian continues his wicked path, brushing off guilt as superficial. He’s pursued by Sibyl’s brother, James Vane, but escapes through cunning. However, fear and disgust grow within him. His life is a contradiction of external grace and internal decay.

The Final Choice

Eventually, Dorian stands before the portrait again. It bears every stain of his sins. He briefly considers repentance but realizes it’s just another vain attempt to preserve his image. In despair, he stabs the painting.

The Last Image of the Soul

The next morning, servants find a youthful painting—and a hideous old corpse. In trying to destroy the painting, Dorian destroyed himself. His body died that night, but his soul had perished long before.

3. Reflection and Interpretation – The Curse of Beauty

The Picture of Dorian Gray explores the duality of appearance and essence. Dorian’s unchanging beauty masks his rotting soul. He consumes life through beauty, seeing morality as an obstacle to art. His downfall stems not only from hedonism, but from denial—his refusal to confront his own decay. The portrait is a mirror of self. Wilde weaves together themes of art, morality, and pleasure to declare: “What you see is not all there is.”
