The Temptation of Hedonism

On the day the portrait is completed, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a philosopher of pleasure. Lord Henry espouses youth and indulgence, leaving a deep impression on Dorian. Fearing the loss of his youth, Dorian exclaims, “If only the picture could grow old, and I remain forever young.” His wish comes true.

Sibyl’s Tragedy

Years later, Basil visits and confronts Dorian about rumors. Dorian shows him the corrupted painting. Horrified, Basil begs him to repent. Enraged, Dorian murders Basil. It is his first murder. He coerces his friend Alan Campbell into disposing of the body. Alan later takes his own life.

Piling Sins

Dorian continues his wicked path, brushing off guilt as superficial. He’s pursued by Sibyl’s brother, James Vane, but escapes through cunning. However, fear and disgust grow within him. His life is a contradiction of external grace and internal decay.

The Final Choice

Eventually, Dorian stands before the portrait again. It bears every stain of his sins. He briefly considers repentance but realizes it’s just another vain attempt to preserve his image. In despair, he stabs the painting.

The next morning, servants find a youthful painting—and a hideous old corpse. In trying to destroy the painting, Dorian destroyed himself. His body died that night, but his soul had perished long before.
