🌍 Ep.1 Europe – Greece: Stepping into the Roots of Civilization

by 시넘사 2025. 4. 20.

Santorini

✈️ Today I’ve landed in Greece, the southeastern gateway of Europe and birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and the Olympic Games. From the moment you step off the plane, you feel the coexistence of ancient heritage and modern vibrancy. The golden glow of street lamps gently meets the shadow of sacred ruins—it’s here that the past walks beside us.

📌 Table of Contents

1. Flag and Location

🇬🇷 Flag: The blue and white stripes with a cross symbolize the Greek Orthodox faith and the surrounding sea and sky.

🗺️ Location: Greece is located in the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Turkey, Albania, and Bulgaria, and surrounded by the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas.

2. History: From Ancient Glory to Modern Struggles

🏛️ Greece was the cradle of ancient civilization—birthplace of democracy in Athens, military might in Sparta, and philosophical giants like Plato and Aristotle. The Parthenon, towering on the Acropolis, still watches over Athens as a symbol of classical brilliance.

After centuries of glory, Greece fell under Ottoman rule (1453–1821), until it reclaimed independence through a national uprising. The 20th century saw wars, dictatorships, and eventual democratic reform. Today, Greece is a proud EU member embracing both heritage and progress.

3. Global Icons: Why the World Loves Greece

🗿 The Acropolis of Athens: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and centerpiece of ancient Athens. As the sun sets, the golden hue over its ruins is simply mesmerizing.

🌊 Santorini: With whitewashed walls, blue-domed churches, and sunsets that make time stand still, this island is a global symbol of romance and peace.

🏺 Delphi & Mycenae: The mystical sanctuary of prophecy and the legendary home of King Agamemnon, blending myth with tangible history.

4. Greece Today: Culture, Economy, and Values

📊 Economy: While recent economic crises shook the nation, tourism and shipping remain robust pillars of recovery.

🧿 Culture: Greek society is family-centered, warm, and generous. The concept of “Filotimo” reflects a deep sense of honor, pride, and social responsibility unique to Greek identity.

🍽️ Food: Souvlaki, moussaka, tzatziki—flavors built on olive oil, herbs, and hospitality. Local wine and fresh seafood elevate every meal into a celebration.

5. A Day in the Life of the Greek People

Greeks start their day with a strong espresso, savor long lunches under the sun, and spend evenings in the embrace of community and food. “Siesta” is not laziness—it’s philosophy. At night in Plaka, music fills the streets, and locals strum the Bouzouki while singing with wine in hand. In these moments, I no longer feel like a traveler, but a participant in Greek life.

6. Glossary of Terms

Term Meaning
Acropolis "High city" – the elevated center of ancient city-states, often featuring temples and sanctuaries.
Filotimo An untranslatable Greek term encompassing honor, pride, kindness, and integrity.
Bouzouki A traditional Greek stringed instrument central to local folk music.

Greece, the first stop in the Global Walk Project. Here, I’ve met not just ruins, but the enduring heart of humanity.
